DMV Scams, Skyrocketing Property Taxes, and the Fight for Transparency in Miami-Dade County
From DMV fraud to property tax assessment fights, Miami-Dade County's accountability gaps affect every resident. Here's what you need to know — and what you can do about it.
Miami-Dade County is one of the most complex local governments in the United States — a sprawling bureaucracy serving more than 2.7 million residents across 34 municipalities, with a budget measured in billions and accountability that doesn't always keep pace with the scale.
On this episode of A Day in Miami, we had a direct, unfiltered conversation about the accountability gaps in Miami-Dade government — and what residents can actually do about them.
The DMV Scam Problem Is Real and Spreading
Florida's DMV service centers have become a hunting ground for fraudsters, and Miami-Dade residents are among the most frequently targeted in the state. The schemes range from title washing on salvage vehicles to identity theft operations targeting people submitting documents for license and registration services.
The episode guest walked through the most common scams: third-party services charging inflated fees for transactions that should be free or low-cost, fraudulent email and text campaigns impersonating the Florida DHSMV, and in-person brokers operating in gray-market territory. For Miami's large immigrant population, these schemes cause serious harm.
The key protective measures: always use official state websites (flhsmv.gov), verify the identity of anyone offering to handle your DMV paperwork, and report suspected fraud to the Florida Attorney General's office.
Property Taxes Are a Crisis for Miami Homeowners
Miami-Dade property values have surged dramatically, and property tax assessments have followed. For newer owners and recent buyers, the math is brutal.
The episode covered how Miami-Dade property assessments work, what the TRIM (Truth in Millage) notice actually tells you, and how to contest your assessment if you believe it's inaccurate. An under-known fact: Miami-Dade property owners have the right to petition the Value Adjustment Board, and a significant percentage of contested assessments result in reductions. Most homeowners don't exercise this right because they don't know it exists.
What Transparency in Miami Government Actually Looks Like
The conversation closed with a discussion of what genuine government transparency in Miami-Dade would require: better digital access to spending data, stronger public records processes, independent oversight of county contracts, and elected officials who treat their constituents as stakeholders.
County commission meetings are public. Budget hearings are announced. Most Miami-Dade residents have never attended either. Showing up changes the incentive structure for everyone in that room.
